Swimwomen breeze by Ohio State

Collegian Sports Writer

The women's swimming and diving team showed its determination to win in 1989 by trouncing the Ohio State Buckeyes, 85-55, Saturday.

The Lady Lions (5-1) trailed by one point going into the one-meter diving event but came back to win.

"It's always a tough meet when you haven't competed in over a month," Coach Bob Krimmel said. "This first one is always frightening; I'm glad it's over with."

Leading the way were Lady Lions Kristen Elias, who won the 200-meter freestyle (1:56.38) and 100 butterfly (58.40); Tracey Sheleheda, who won the 100 freestyle (54.24); Lisa Maximo, who won the 200 backstroke (2:09.03); Kristen Lilly, who won the 500 freestyle (4:59.61); and Elizabeth Fahey, who won the three-meter diving.

Beth Haas won the 200 breaststroke although she still suffered from an illness.

"If that's the way she swims when she's sick, I hope she continues to be sick," Krimmel said.

Krimmel switched some swimmers from their usual events, allowing them to swim events that they have shown promise in during practice.

"I took a gamble to see if we had a little depth," Krimmel said. "Mentally, it will help in the long run too; we don't want to let anyone get stale swimming the same events all the time."

Maximo swam the 200 butterfly instead of her usual 200 and 400 individual medley and performed well by finishing second in 2:12.07.

"That is a lifetime best time for Lisa," Krimmel said, "She usually swims back, not fly."

"I don't really mind swimming in other events," Maximo said. "I'll swim anything that's open."

Freshmen also stood out in Saturday's meet. Amy Schmidt won the one-meter diving, and Sheleheda placed second in the 50 freestyle in addition to her 100 freestyle victory.

"I'm really pleased with my times," Sheleheda said. "The workouts have been really tough since we came back and they've paid off."
