Sorority rush revs up with mixer

Collegian Staff Writer

Women interested in joining a sorority were welcomed to "Club Rush" last night in the HUB ballroom by representatives from the 17 social sororities that will be conducting formal rush next week.

"I think it (the mixer) is a good way to come in and get an overall feel of what rush is going to be like," said Margaret Preston (junior-history).

Preston said it's nice for women to meet a friendly face they might recognize later during rush and get an idea of what sort of questions to ask.

"It was sort of overwhelming at first but I thought it was fun to get involved and meet people," said Carolyn Roberts (sophomore-secondary education.)

Each sorority displayed pictures, scrapbooks, letters and sweatshirts to show students what their activities and philanthropies are like.

"The fact that it's informal helps people come in and out," said Tara Goff, rush coordinator.

This year the mixer was held in larger quarters than in previous years -- instead of being held in the HUB fishbowl, it was moved to the ballroom, Goff explained.

"We had twice the space so we had twice as much table space and twice as many representatives from each sorority," said Goff, adding that she thought a larger number of women turned out this year.

Representatives from Sigma Sigma Sigma and Delta Zeta, two newly established sororities, were also present at the mixer last night to greet students and introduce themselves.

"The rush mixer is a way to get people acquainted with the idea," said Joy Restucci, a field representative for Sigma Sigma Sigma.

The two sororities will complete first rounds with the other sororities.
