Shaking the water from his hair, Ben Polinger fingered the silver medal he had just won in the 50 meter freestyle at this weekend's Special Olympics.

They came, they saw and they want to conquer -- or at least change what they call Pennsylvania's unfair wage-preference policies.

More than 1,400 athletes competed at the University this weekend in the XIX Pennsylvania Summer Special Olympics, and everyone involved was a winner in some way.

Touch their hearts and your own. Volunteer and catch the spirit' of Special Olympics. You'll feel a glow you've never known!" the promotional flyer read.

A compact car carrying seven people struck a street light early yesterday, injuring one person, the State College Bureau of Police Services reported.


SPORTS

When she was born, the doctors advised her mother to place her in an institution, claiming she was so severely mentally retarded she would never amount to anything. Her mother refused, choosing to provide her with a family's love and support.
