Public defense preceedings in Centre County may be slowed down after two of five public defenders left their positions last week.

University President Bryce Jordan has approved five recommendations of a University AIDS task force that will make condoms more readily available to students.

Members of the Coalition for Human Equality will speak with administrators about minority concerns on campus in a closed meeting today, while a rally is held outside to show support for the student negotiators.

Members of the Undergraduate Student Government have taken their first steps in fighting what they call an uphill battle" to open the University budget.

SPORTS

Following its season-opening disaster against Duke, the members of the men's lacrosse team had good reason to look at their next 13 games with a bit of pessimism. The Lions dropped a 22-8 contest and faced a lot of questions about the 1988 season.

REPEAT (vb.): to do something again. (Ex.: No one has ever repeated as national champion in women's lacrosse since the NCAA started sponsoring the tournament in 1982.

Head Softball Coach Sue Rankin's goal at the start of this season was quite simple -- to regain the Atlantic 10 championship. And despite an injury plagued year, the Lady Lions, at 9-3 in the conference, look very strong going into the A-10 tournament, scheduled for May 6-8 in Rhode Island.

The softball team played the University of Rhode Island under arctic- like conditions yesterday at Lady Lion Field, giving the Wrams a chance to qualify for an Atlantic 10 playoff spot. Rhode Island needed a sweep of the Lady Lions to capture the fourth seed for the tournament, which it is hosting.

A showdown is imminent. For the men's volleyball team, crunch time has arrived.

Coming off last year's 29-19 mark, expectations were high for the baseball team this season as it set out for another Atlantic 10 Conference playoff berth.

It has been, if nothing else, an interesting season for the women's gymastics team. A rash of injuries, a big victory in the NCAA regionals, and a baby boy all contributed to making this season a memorable one for the Lady Lions.

Coming off a fourth-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships, the men's tennis team (9-13) will wrap up its season with a three-match road trip beginning today at Columbia University.

Does the thought of giving birth make you feel like dancing?

Just because many students leave State College for the summer doesn't mean that cultural opportunities cease to exist. Four blockbuster plays will be presented by Pennsylvania Center Stage for summer entertainment.

Dreamgirls and Broadway Bound are just two of the shows offered by the Center for the Performing Arts' Artist Series for the 1988-1989 season. At a preview held for subscribers in Eisenhower Auditorium last Thursday evening, Ken Foster, director for CPA, said that the season's theme will be "Celebrating Personal Excellence." The theme was chosen to describe what the vast array of performers have in common, Foster said.
