Gymwomen lose to Lady Cornhuskers

Collegian Sports Writer

The women's gymnastics team lost at Nebraska last night, 184.30-182.05. The Lady Lions' record fell to 10-5 after the loss.

Head Coach Judi Avener said the loss to the Lady Cornhuskers and the team's third-place showing in the Cat Classic has taken its toll on the team.

"We're all a little disappointed," she said. "It's discouraging. The team is starting to lose confidence."

Freshman Lynn Crane was the tops in the all-around competition for Penn State, finishing fourth with a score of 36.40. Senior Jessica Strunck took sixth with a 35.70.

Freshman Lisa Mallios was second on the vault with a 9.45. It was only the second meet this season that Mallios has not won the vault. Strunck was third in the vault with a 9.35.

Pam Braun, Crane and Kira Rohm tied for third on the uneven bars with a 9.4. Sue Repmann took second in the balance beam at 9.25, with Mallios finishing in fourth with a 9.05. Kathy Parody was fourth in the floor exercise with a 9.35.

The team's problems on the balance beam continued. The Lady Lions had a team score of 44.20 on the beam, as opposed to scores of 45.00 on floor exercise, a 46.35 on bars and a 46.50 on vault.

"Our vaulting and bars were great, but our beam was one of our worst performances," Avener said. "We had our best bar performance of the season."

The team lost junior Debbie O'Brien for the season Friday with a knee injury, but Avener said that the team's overall health is improving.

"Pam Braun has reached full difficulty in her floor-exercise routine," Avener said. "Kathy Parody did bars as a non-performer, but she is still doing them. Sue Repmann competed in three events again."
