In a column appearing in The Collegian Jan. 29, Chino Wilson described the infamous Howard Beach gang attack as a racial incident. I realize that nearly all forms of major media have done this, and I do not wish to single out Wilson.
However, there are two inconsistencies in this case which perhaps someone would explain before categorizing this incident as racially motivated.
First of all, why did (I will not speculate that he still does) the leader of this prejudice white gang have a black girlfriend? Seems odd to me. Secondly, why did this same gang beat a white fireman just off-duty, breaking his leg before chasing the black youths for which this night is remembered? Perhaps "Gang goes on violent rampage" would have been a more appropriate headline. But this doesn't sell newspapers.
This past Saturday a representative from Howard Beach wrote an editorial in the New York Times criticizing the media for their gross manipulation of the incident. If you should happen to read this article please keep in mind the above points I believe he assumes you knew them.
