During the second in a series of Office of Civil Rights hearings closed to the press, three non-black students and one alumna told members of the OCR that the University has not attempted to provide a supportive atmosphere for minority students.

The University will engage in a major study this semester of its salary and job classification system, University President Bryce Jordan announced last week at a meeting of a local chapter of the Educational Office Personnel.

An election of new board officials and a report on parking head the list of topics to be covered at this weekend's University Board of Trustees meeting at the Keller Conference Center on campus.

The State College Borough Council discussed lowering parking requirements for 47 different categories of parking outside the downtown area in a work session earlier this week.

State College Borough Council will continue to look at the effectiveness of the Centre Region Council of Governments in dealing with the borough's needs, the new borough council president said, but officials said council is not seriously considering pulling out of COG.

Opportunities for desegregation may be decreased by a recent court decision which no longer requires federal enforcement of civil rights legislation, student leaders and representatives from national civil rights organizations said, and some said they hope an appeal of the decision is successful.

A $5.7 million research contract for the development of an electric artificial heart has been awarded to a researcher at the University's Hershey Medical Center.

Beginning this year, students applying for federal financial aid and guaranteed student loans may find some changes in eligibility because of modifications in the criteria used to determine financial need, University officials said.

He may not capture headlines like Jesse Jackson and Gary Hart, yet he feels he has just as much of a chance to snare the Democratic nomination for president.

The HUB ballroom looked like the inside of Shields building during drop/add last evening as over 700 male students packed their way into the Interfraternity Council Spring Rush Mixer, in search of the Penn State fraternity experience.

A small twin-engine aircraft landed safely at the University Park Airport at 4:33 yesterday afternoon after it developed engine trouble about an hour into its flight.

The State College Zoning Hearing Board denied a request Monday by the owners of the Atherton Hotel, currently under construction on Atherton Street between College and Beaver avenues, for a sign to be roughly 63 feet above the ground.

Area blood supplies have been running low, but should return to normal by the end of the week or early next week, said a spokesperson for the Johnstown Region American Red Cross Blood Services.

SPORTS

After the Lady Lion basketball team (7-4, 1-2) lost its second game in three outings last Saturday, it seemed like the roof was about to cave in on the 1987-88 season. But Head Coach Rene Portland isn't about to let that happen.

The women's gymnastics team easily won its season-opener last night against Temple, taking the top four spots in the all-around and the top three spots in each individual event to down the Lady Owls, 179.80-170.25.
