A $50,000 gift from Daily Collegian alumnus John Beauge and his sister, Diane Beauge Glynn, has endowed an undergraduate scholarship in memory of their father, who was also a Collegian alumnus.

The Quinton E. Beauge Memorial Journalism Scholarship will provide assistance to one or more students each year. A first preference will be given to those majoring in journalism, and an additional preference to those from Lycoming County.

This article was adapted from an earlier report by Collegian alumnus Steve Sampsell (‘91).

Quinton E. Beague, a 1930 graduate of Penn State with a journalism degree, was a lifelong newspaperman. He started as a Collegian staff member and, upon graduation, worked as a reporter for the former Gazette & Bulletin. He was general manager and executive editor of the Williamsport Sun-Gazette until he died in 1981. Beague served as president of the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association and the Pennsylvania Associated Press. He helped organize the Pennsylvania Associated Press Managing Editors.

His son, John, graduated from Penn State with a journalism degree in 1962 and earned his master's degree from Northwestern University in 1963.

He was a four-year member of the Collegian staff, serving as photo editor his senior year.

John Beague started at the Williamsport Sun-Gazette as a reporter-photographer in 1963 and later became city editor. Since 1983, he has been a correspondent for the Patriot-News of Harrisburg and has done freelance writing.

He has won state awards for news photographs and was cited by the Associated Press along with the Sun-Gazette for news coverage. Beauge, a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, is active in community affairs in Williamsport.
