Looking Back at Business: Passion key to young staff's success
Collegian Insider 2006

The Daily Collegian Business Division has had another outstanding year.

With many staff members graduating last year, the division had a young staff that thrived on new ideas and a passion for greatness.

This was perfect for the fun-filled attitude managers brought to the table. The hard-work and dedication shown by those who continued to build on the success of the Collegian cannot be expressed in so few words here, but I will explain as best as possible.

The summer laid the groundwork for what was to come. With fewer than 20 students running the division, the staff built a strong bond. Many members handled multiple positions so the division could run efficiently. The experience we gained in those few summer weeks helped us to finish August 2005 with the highest sales totals ever. And better still, that commitment to excellence continued in the fall semester.

With fall came not only a full staff, but also a change in attitude. The more hectic environment as well as a slow start in sales brought a dark time for the staff. After a few staff changes, the environment in the office dramatically changed.

Those staff members who continued with the Collegian showed their dedication and continued to surpass the expectations of their managers. Circulation started to increase, partially due to a solid football season, but also to some strong hard news coverage. The Promotions Department was also a factor in the increase of circulation with some new marketing tactics.

For the first time, the Collegian Three-On-Three Basketball Tournament was held. With more than 80 participants, the Collegian increased student awareness and will continue this annual tournament next year. The Promotions Department learned multiple things with the first attempt at this tournament and next year's promises to be even bigger and better.

The spring continued to bring new ideas and a successful working environment. The Bowl Section Preview, the Return to Glory Magazine, the Thon Puzzle Book and the Official WhiteOut Shirt Design Contest were all innovations that helped the Collegian in many ways. With so many new ideas that succeeded, a big "thank you" is due the entire staff.

The Creative Department was able to create new and unique ads for each idea, the Sales Department was able to sell advertising for each new publication thrown its way and the Promotions Department was able to market these ideas successfully.

Without the dedication and commitment the Business Division showed this year, we would not have been as successful. Although a strong senior class is graduating this year, the division should continue to strive.

I look forward to returning next year to see the division pass the records we set. I am so thankful for the experience of not only working with but also being a part of such a fantastic organization.
