My Opinion
Attitude adjustment led to big year for Business Division
Business / Looking Back

It's been one amazing year for the Business Division and The Daily Collegian as a whole. We have been blessed with many positive changes, as well as positive attitudes. It has taken the hard work of every student staff member to make this such a successful year. Although the hours dedicated to this organization cannot be summized in a few paragraphs, I will try my best to do them justice:

When my managers and I began our reign in the summer of 2004, we wanted to create an upbeat office atmosphere that would permeate every department. We knew if we were eager to work and set a professional example, others would follow. That attitude led to an intense work ethic within the division, something we had not seen during our time here.

By the end of the summer, Act 199 had been lifted and we were bracing ourselves for full-page beer distributor ads that never arrived. Luckily, our dynamic summer staff and new creative specialists eased our transition into the fall semester with record-breaking sales.

With the start of the fall training class came the addition of the student Production Department. Here students would have the opportunity to learn print media production before leaving college. Now print production is a pre-requisite for any specialist entering the Creative Department.

The end of the fall semester brought promises of credit card transactions and an even larger increase to our bottom line. The much overlooked Layout and Accounting departments were as consistent as always, keeping errors to a minimum. Our positive attitude and efficient schedule remained steady up until a well-deserved winter break.

The spring semester lived up to expectations: advertising quotas got larger and more challenging, and classified ad insertions hit an all-time high. No doubt credit card acceptance and our new online insertion order helped our dependable customer service staff reach these goals.

As the State College weather got warmer and class attendance began to fade, Bizzies began looking forward to jobs, internships and a possible summer spent at the Collegian. The year, ended with a spectacular formal that was carefully planned by our Promotions Department.

After my departure I will certainly miss the friendships made and knowledge gained from the professional staff, student staff members and managers. So thanks for a great year and a great end to my collegiate experience.
