Wayne Hilinski '62,

a former member of the Collegian Board of Directors and the Collegian Alumni Interest Group, retired at the end of the 2004-2005 academic year from his position as senior lecturer in advertising and public relations with Penn State's College of Communications.

Hilinski announced at a recent board meeting he would also be leaving the Collegian at the end of the 2004-2005 academic year.

Dave Blazek '79

is the creator of the daily comic strip Loose Parts, syndicated to papers across America and overseas by Tribune Media Services. Dave also works at the Philadelphia Inquier and Philadelphia Daily News, as a senior creative. He also handles business writing and television and radio directing for clients across the country. Dave lives with his wife, Eileen Beach Blazek '79, and two daughters atop Valley Forge Mountain in Valley Forge. He can be contacted at looseparts@comcast.net.




Della Hoke-Uvick '81

was one of 137 artists chosen to participate in CowParade's Harrisburg public art event this year. Her cow, titled "Flower, A Cow By Any Other Name," sold for $6,000 at the live auction. A graphics editor while at the Collegian, Della now teaches cartooning to children and youth at The Art Center, Mechanicsburg. She also freelances and sells her work at area arts festivals. She lives in Camp Hill with her husband, Don '80, and their two teenage daughters. Her address is 1918 Princeton Ave., Camp Hill, PA 17011. Her phone number is 717-737-9251.




Mike Poorman '82,

a former Collegian sports editor, has been appointed manager of alumni relations and senior lecturer in the Penn State College of Communications.

In his new position Poorman will be responsible for alumni activities and events for the College of Communications. He will work closely with several alumni groups, including the Collegian Alumni Interest Group.

Since 1995, Poorman had served as senior vice president of the Barash Group, overseeing dozens of publications, including Town & Gown.

Poorman worked for several newspapers before joining Barash, including a stint as associate sports editor for the Centre Daily Times.




Diane Davis '90

has been named metropolitan editor of Newsday, overseeing the daily operation of the New York City edition.

Davis, who was deputy metro editor, joined Newsday in 1997 as a copy editor after serving as metro editor at the Star-Gazette in Elmira, N.Y., where she started as a feature writer. She has been an assistant city editor, deputy metro editor, and day city editor for the New York desk. She started her newspaper career at the Intelligencer Journal in Lancaster after serving as Collegian editor.

Davis and her husband, Jack Otter, a former Newsday, editor, live in Brooklyn.




Brian Costello '98

returned to The Daily Collegian during the fall semester 2004 to speak with sports reporters and editors about his experiences as a reporter for the New York Post.




Leslie Craze '01

is working under a fellowship from the New York City Department of Education. She is spearheading her middle school's first newspaper in more than a decade as a language arts/literature teacher and newspaper adviser.

Since Penn State, Leslie has received her master's degree from Pace University. She served as a beat editor and copy editor while at the Collegian.

Erica Zarra '04

received the New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists' 2005 Wilson Barto Award for Outstanding Achievement by a First-Year Reporter: Weekly Division.

Zarra, Collegian managing editor/content during the 2003-2004 academic year, is a reporter for both Bloomfield Life and the Glen Ridge Paper in New Jersey.
