Noted group of journalists holds forum on issues here

The Daily Collegian's Educational Program hosted an unprecedent two-day workshop called The Forum on Journalism Issues in the fall.

The workshop, co-sponsored by the Collegian and Penn State's College of Communication, was held Oct. 1 and 2, 2004, in the Collegian classroom.

Coordinating the event were Gene Forman, Collegian Board of Directors member and College of Communications' Foster Professor, and John Harvey, Collegian news adviser.

The forum was part of a national outreach, the Traveling Curriculum Program, led by the Committee of Concerned Journalists.

The Collegian was chosen by this prestigious panel of nationally known journalists among student newspapers nationally. Sessions included "Bias and Verification" and "Engagement and Proportionality."

The primary presenter was Katie King, an online media executive whose career includes work in a variety of positions for Reuters News Service. She joined the groundbreaking Reuters NewMedia Division at its creation in 1994 and later launched Reuters' first daily multimedia and mobile product lines. Prior to that, she served as international correspondent and editorial manager for Reuters across Latin America.

With 41 Collegian staff members from the News Division participating in the workshop, both Foreman and Harvey agreed it was a success.

"Gene (Foreman) played a major role in bringing this to our doorstep," Harvey said. "As a board member, a professor and a journalist, he has proven, though events like this, how valuable he is to us."
