The Hearst Foundation, Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, Associated Collegiate Press and Columbia Scholastic Press Association rewarded The Daily Collegian for its outstanding excellence in journalism and performance with awards for 2000-2001.
Two Collegian staff members won Hearst Foundation awards. Ryan Hockensmith, Duncannon, Pa., took second place in the Features category and eighth in the Profiles category. Jon Allison, Wilmington, Del., was awarded sixth place in the Sportswriting category. The Collegian won 13 Pennsylvania Newspaper Association "Collegiate Keystone Press Awards."
Rebecca Harkness, Rochester, N.Y.; Drew Huang, Portland, Ore.; and Daryl Lang, Ellicott City, Md., won first-place awards in the Spot News category.
First places were also awarded to James Rajotte, State College, Pa., for Sports Photo, Megan Morr, Williamsport, Pa., for News/Feature Photo and Lang for Feature Story.
Alison Kepner, Maytown, Pa.; Heather Cook, Charleroi, Pa.; Lang and Alissa Wisnouse, Moon Township, Pa.; received second-place for their bylined story in the Ongoing News Coverage category.
Second places went to Jeremy Cooke, Erdenheim, Pa., for Feature Story and Editorial, Mike Still, Lancaster, Pa., for Column, Jamie Perruquet, Danville, Pa., for Cartoon/ Graphic Illustration, Dan Saelinger, Sunbury, Pa., for News/Feature Photo, Hockensmith for Public Service/ Enterprise Series and Kelly Bradish, Ligonier, Pa., for Best Web Site. Honorable Mention went to Saelinger for a second entry in the News/Feature Photo category.
Six Collegian journalists won 2001 Gold Circle Awards, including a first-place finish by Hockensmith for First-Person Article.
In the News Features category, Cook, Wisnouse and Lang took third place for their bylined story.
Geoff Dodd, West Chester, Pa., and Lang won certificates of merit for Sports Story and Person Opinion/Off-Campus, respectively.
The News Division was recognized by the Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker Awards as the national winner for the Inaugural "Diversity Award" and was a 2000 finalist for the Daily Newspaper Pacemaker Award.
The Business Division's efforts were rewarded by the College Newspaper Business and Advertising Managers conference with third places in the Best Business Training Program category, Best Run of Press Group Promotion and Best Media Kit/Marketing Package category.
